Process Automation has evolved with the emerging needs of businesses looking to automate their operations and move from manual and repetitive processes. The introduction of low-code/no-code development models has made automation accessible to even citizen developers with minimal coding knowledge. Taking a step forward, Microsoft announced the latest updates in Power Automate at the recent Ignite 2022 conference. Power Automate is soon to have a feature that allows users to type a flow requirement in their natural language. The application automatically generates the corresponding flow, along with easy steps to connect a data source and target event.

This feature is currently available for a limited preview and set for a launch soon. Let’s look at the latest updates in Power Automate-poised to be a game-changer in the process automation spectrum.

How does the Natural Language Processing work with Power Automate

The functionality uses OpenAI Codex-a system that translates natural language instructions to over 12 different programming languages. It’s designed to simplify the use of applications by use of an interface that understands the user’s intent and requirements, which are then correspondingly translated into a code that runs in the application. This revolutionary system was first introduced in 2021 and powered the GitHub Copilot.

Power Automate uses the OpenAI Codex to create Cloud Flows, which currently support descriptions written in English, with support for other languages being in the pipeline. The input description will automatically generate the required flow formats, which can be quickly configured to get the desired automation.  Users can format the fields as per their requirements by giving examples of the output format, and the required expression is automatically generated

For example, a user requiring an email and a message on Teams whenever a new document gets uploaded on SharePoint can enter the description” Send an email and post a message in Teams whenever a new document gets uploaded in SharePoint”, and the suggested flow is automatically generated.

Using the automatically generated flows, users can automate the actions for the below applications, using Microsoft 365 connectors.

  • Microsoft Excel and Forms
  • Microsoft 365 Outlook and OneDrive for Business
  • Microsoft Teams and Planner
  • Microsoft SharePoint

The feature is set to be launched soon, with additional connectors and supported languages set for inclusion in the coming months. It certainly is one of the most outstanding capabilities amongst the latest updates in Power Automate.

What it means to Power Automate Users

  • Automatic Flow creation enables the democratization of building process automation, over and above the no-code/low-code model.
  • It does away with the process of manually creating automated processes, saving time and the requirement for coding skills.
  • Power Automate accurately creates the automation flows with multiple options as per the description, with easy connection to a data source and a target task execution environment.

Intelligent Document Processing

Another latest update in Power Automate that was mentioned in the Ignite 2022 event is the enhancement to the Intelligent Document Processing feature. In the current stage, Intelligent Document Processing uses the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) capability in conjunction with Machine Learning capabilities to extract text from a wide range of document types-such as e-mails, Word files, and PDFs by the AI Builder feature in Power Automate. Below outlined are the recent additions to the existing solutions.

  • Simplified data extraction from unstructured or free-form documents (Now generally available)
  • Improved accuracy with the “Feedback Loop” (In Preview), which enables users to identify and flag documents from which the extracted text has low accuracy, enabling the refining of the data extraction process.
  • Inclusion of data extraction from multiple pages-often seen in complex documents.
  • Support for over 164+ languages, which include handwritten documents in Japanese and other languages.
  • Automated invoice processing in English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese languages.

The above latest updates in Power Automate will greatly simplify the automation experience for businesses looking to put the “Power” of automation into every user. Users can now rapidly build common automation processes that improve accuracy and efficacy. This does away with manually building the automation sequence and further extends the scope of the vast capabilities that Power Automate offers. Stay tuned for more updates.
